RANDY swam through syrupy layers of consciousness. A vague feeling of apprehension niggled at him. Randy peeled open an eyelid and glanced at the other side of the bed, which was empty. He brushed the hair out of his eyes, and it dawned on him that his hands were free now. Garrett must have untied him at some point last night….

Oh no, last night.

Reality crashed in. Randy lay in Garrett’s bed quietly panicking, thoughts bombarding him.

“What have I done?” Randy said softly.

He struggled with those wickedly sinful silk sheets that were determined to stay wrapped around his hips, keeping him trapped in Garrett’s bed. Randy kicked his way clear and jumped out of bed.

“Garrett?”

Silence answered Randy, an oppressive silence that mocked him.

“Garrett, are you here?”

Randy’s eyes darted over the room before landing on the big mirror. Taped on the mirror over the coffeemaker was a note. Randy made his way to it, half afraid to read it, but unable to resist. The coffeemaker was on and held a full pot.

The cup Randy had used his first night sat by the coffeemaker. Randy lifted the note off the mirror and opened it, half expecting to find some politely written letter telling him that it had been fun, have some coffee and then beat it. Swallowing his pride, Randy opened it.

Hey,

I couldn’t sleep so I went to the casino. Help yourself to the coffee so you can string together complete sentences, order some breakfast, and hang tight. I’ll be back shortly, and then we need to talk.

Garrett

Sweat broke out across Randy’s forehead. Randy could think of only one thing they could need to talk about, and it wasn’t good. He knew he was overreacting, but it wasn’t like Garrett planned to declare his undying love to someone he’d met barely three days ago. His stomach turned over as he imagined Garrett telling him that it had been fun, he was a nice piece of ass, and that what happened in Vegas stayed in Vegas.

Damn, he hated that saying.

Cold sweat broke out over his body as he thought about that stupid cliché. He knew he wouldn’t be able to face Garrett calmly while he ripped his heart out. Randy didn’t doubt Garrett would be as gentle as he could while letting him down, but it would still hurt. Even though Randy fell in love didn’t mean Garrett felt the same way.

“How could I have fallen for a stranger, and one who has doubtless had countless hook-ups?” Randy ran his hand through his hair. “I’m nothing special, and he’s probably had way better than me.”

Randy thought about Garrett’s proclivities for throwing his money around, the casual, thoughtless way he expected to spend money on his dates, and realized Garrett probably wouldn’t remember him when he was gone. Garrett didn’t have any receipts to mark Randy’s passage through his life. Randy went cold inside. The only reason he was memorable at all was because he hadn’t cost Garrett anything, like a comped room at one of the Vegas hotels.
